Hafnia believes in the importance of understanding the role we can play in sustainable practices in maritime energy transportation. By having a clear approach and strong management commitment to Sustainability, we are confident that Hafnia can become a better company in a better world.

Our Initiatives

Addressing our concerns about sustainability means that we take action. Hafnia’s sustainability initiatives directly address our sustainability goals and are developed to complement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through our initiatives we seek to create good health and wellbeing among our people, a culture of integrity, prioritize positive environmental action and foster professional development and inclusivity.

UNSDG #3 – Good Health and Wellbeing: The Hafnia Wellness Program

The Hafnia wellness program was launched on June the 10th 2019 – fleetwide. It was designed with a holistic approach to ensuring the healthy lifestyle of our people at sea. The health of our staff impacts safety onboard our ships. This, in turn, influences Hafnia’s ability to deliver on its promises. Through the basic premise of safeguarding the health of our people, Hafnia introduced an online platform for seafarers to monitor; fitness, nutrition, wellness and education.

"At the very core of smooth sailing is a vessel’s crew. Healthy seafarers are more alert, and also able to work more efficiently and safely. Our crew are hardworking people spending time at sea to support families and communities, and we want to take good care of them."

UNSDG #8 – Decent work & Economic Growth: Traineeships at Hafnia

We are only as good as our people. That’s why we invest in the professional development of all of them. Through them we grow and improve as an organization. Our people can also expect a safe workplace where everyone is treated with respect and dignity. Our culture is to encourage people to have an opinion and push their professional limits. Doing things differently is after all how Hafnia was first established and what will encourage our future growth.

“At Hafnia we provide professional opportunities for all our people. We offer employees the chance to learn and upgrade their skills and encourage an atmosphere of creativity and innovation.”

Perry Van Echtelt | CFO | Hafnia

UNSDG #13 – Climate Action: Environmental Management Plan

Our Environmental Management Plan details our initiatives on climate action. Our starting point is operational efficiency to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. To tackle these issues, we have voluntarily registered for ISO 14001: 2015 certification. We have also implemented goals and targets to ensure new levels of efficiency are achieved year upon year. We aim for zero oil and chemical spills and zero ballast water discharge violation. We also have tiered targets to help reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by optimizing engines and fuel supply systems and improving hydrodynamic performance. Hafnia also participates in the industry initiative “Green Ship for the Future” and industry group “Shiplab” that focuses on the development of alternative ship fuels that reduce CO2 emissions.

“At Hafnia, we go beyond regulatory compliance in our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint. We set measurable goals for our vessels so as to reduce emissions to air and sea with increased efficiency. We also participate in industry groups, lending our expertise, data and voice to make progress as an industry.”

UNSDG#16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: Anti-Bribery and Corruption Initiative

Bribery and corruption are big business around the world. Particularly in the maritime industry. The IMF states the annual cost of bribery is estimated at between 1.5–2 trillion US dollars. Hafnia tackles this issue head on with a zero-tolerance policy. All our employees are instructed to refuse and report any matters concerning bribery and corruption. Our initiative also adheres to the principles of the UK’s Bribery Act of 2010. Furthermore, we are members of the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network, cementing our commitment to transparency throughout the maritime industry.

“As an active member of the MACN, Hafnia continues to devote resources to emphasize our company’s stand against bribery and corruption, and we will support our crew and all employees for any report on instances”

Michael Rasmussen | Senior Manager, Performance | Hafnia
